A Passion For Home

Selecting fabric...

I am so indecisive.  Perhaps it's my lack of confidence with color and design.  Actually, I'm certain that is it (one of the only things I am certain of). When I view fabric samples, I gasp if I like it.  It's when I take the fabric samples home to the space it is intended for that I begin to panic.

Aimee at Valerianne is continuing to work hard to help me complete our guest bedroom and adjoining bath. After viewing numerous fabrics, we narrowed it down to two.

For our guest bathroom, Aimee has suggested a roman shade (an idea I love).

Here is fabric Option 1:

Duralee is a well-known manufacturer of fabrics and I couldn't be more excited about this sample.  I currently have a fascination with brown and the design embroidered into the fabric is reminiscent of a neoclassical design I admire, just as Aimee pointed out.

Here's the full picture:

The brown picks-up the color of the reeds in the decorative vase the cherub is holding.  What I like, too, is that there is not a lot of brown color going on in this space.  

Now for fabric Option 2:

The Pindler & Pindler fabric is a wonderful selection with embroidered leaves throughout.  

I'm not sure if the fabric is too monochromatic for the space though.  

I haven't ruled out this fabric.  Aimee suggested a cushion for the Lane hope chest we've owned since my husband and I were first married.

It will complement the pillows on the bed very nicely.

I intend to make a decision by the weekend.  If you have an opinion you'd like to share, I'm all eyes and ears.  

It takes a village to design and decorate our home which is why I am thankful for technology.  I wouldn't have it any other way.  

Hang Ten...

It is a challenge for me to come up with an idea on my own.  More than likely, my inspiration begins with visual aid.  

I read a magazine or book and see a photo that prompts me to experiment with a new design idea in our home.  

Lately, blog-reading has been a fun and too convenient way to shop ideas for our home.  It is while browsing Susie Isaac's Maggie G Designs blog, my eyes land on drapery panels hanging in her dining room. 

Alternating colors of jacquard woven fabric with translucent sheerness mixed in and in a neutral color scheme were grabbing my attention.  Introducing Hang Ten fabric by Pollack.

After expressing my admiration for her drapery panels, Susie shared her inspiration photo with me.

Traditional Home

It reaffirmed my feelings for this fabric.  And so it began.  Susie, who offers a trade only buying service known as Maddie G Designs, arranged to have fabric samples sent to me and facilitated the process with her workroom on measurements, design and sewing of the panels.  Several weeks later, we now have a dining room window dressed with beautiful fabric in a pinch pleat fashion.

 It's a breath of fresh air every time I enter our dining room.

I ordered the woven shades from Smith + Noble.  I'm happy with the shades but now realize how much better they would look if we hung them just underneath the curtain rod for emphasis on the height of the window.  Lesson learned: measure for outside mount woven shades for added height.

On days when the sun is pouring through our dining room window, I'm reminded of how much of a positive impact this fabric has made to this space.  It proves how surrounding yourself with what you love can alter your mood in a good way.

Thanks to Susie, I love what surrounds our dining room window.

It's a bust...

During my visit to the DC Design House in April, I was drawn to many things including the guest room designed by Michael Hampton.

In the back of my mind, I knew I wanted to take our own guest room and create a neoclassical environment.  When I saw the framed vintage busts matted in linen, my heart palpitated with excitement. Ideas floating through my mind of what I could do with this artwork that would set-off a chain of events that are still coming together today.

Mr. Hampton was offering the grouping for sale once the DC Design House ended.  This grouping was too large for our guest room, so he kindly arranged to have a pair framed just like those on display in the design house.

I am overjoyed.  It now awaits my husband's skill at hanging artwork onto the walls of the guest bedroom.  

There are so many great things I am learning about Mr. Hampton, including his appreciation for architecture and wonderful artistic abilities.

Guest Bedroom...A Work in Progress

Collaboration is something I like to do when it comes to our home.  I have an idea and direction I like to go in but it always helps when someone with knowledge and expertise to build-on those thoughts you have in mind.  

A perfect example is Aimee, owner of Valerianne (a local luxury linens shop in Vienna, Virginia...they are also on Facebook).  I presented to her my inspiration.

I was drawn to the simplicity and tailored style of this bed.  Aimee, an expert on bedrooms, bedding and linens, took one look and made some incredible recommendations for our guest room that houses a full-sized bed.  

Today, she personally delivered and unveiled these wonderful linens onto our guest bed. I'm ecstatic over how she brought together the tailored look I dreamed of.  My only request was for a theme that represents a neoclassical design aesthetic.  And she fulfilled that request.

I want to share the entire space but there remains a few tasks in need of completion.  

Meanwhile, here's a glimpse of the adjoining guest bath where we took down the towel bar I was not very fond of and replaced it with a wall shelf & towel bar.  

I love how this space is coming together and have a great desire to spend more time in this room myself.

My goal is to provide comfort and convenience to our guests.  This is one project I am enjoying each and every moment seeing it come to fruition.

I do have a question for those who take a moment to visit A Passion for Home, and that is as a guest, what do you like to be surrounded with and available at your fingertips?

My task now is to convince my husband how important it is to hang the curtain rod now rather than later. Perhaps I need a guest to visit to motivate him?

I'm sure many of you can relate.  :-)

The Santorini...

My connection to Atlanta when it comes to home design and furnishings is Things that Inspire.  I do not need to travel to Atlanta as Holly, author of Things that Inspire, are my eyes and ears.  I read about a great home element on her blog and the next thing you know, I am browsing faucets at Waterworks.  

Her business, Quatrefoil Design (which was just featured in Atlanta Magazine recently), introduced me to framed intaglios.  I now own 4 pieces, thanks to her blog and design site.  

Quite often she discusses design elements in a home, some of which I've never heard of.  I now have chevron floors

After collaborating back and forth with Holly about furniture and accessories, she introduced me to the Painted Edge line by The Gables Antiques in Atlanta.  

One glance at the Lido Desk and I was pining for a new home office.

I saw the Higgins Drinks Table while visiting Charlotte recently at a local design shop.  I am entranced by the shape of this table.

It was the Santorini Console that won me over.  

I had not seen it in person but I knew it was the ideal piece of furniture to place behind our sofa in the family room.

The one design element that attracted me to the Santorini Console are the 'x' shaped legs underneath the tabletop.  

It fills-up the back of the sofa with great shape and muscle, so-to-speak.

The finish met my expectations and then some. 

I studied the paint samples for severals days, placing them in the family room during daylight, sunset and evening.

The outcome exceeded my expectations.  And I couldn't be more content than I am today with this piece of furniture.  It's amazing what it can do to one's mood when you have achieved perfect harmony in your home.

A bathroom mirror & federal style...

When I expressed an interest in federal style design and a yearn for an embossed star framed mirror, a dear friend of mine took note.  She discovered a frame at a second-hand shop and went to great lengths to make sure I didn't miss out on this great deal.  

I'm so glad she did.  As I work diligently on our guest bedroom to reflect a neoclassical style, I somehow wanted to incorporate this frame into this room.  It was when I held it up to the guest bathroom's mirror, I decided it was worth the risk (utilizing double-sided foam tape) to adhere it to the rectangular mirror.

It's a unique twist and it adds flavor to the setting I'm attempting to achieve.  Using foam tape gives me the option to take it down at any time I choose.  I only hope it holds up to the steam from the shower.  

Once this space comes together, I will share more.  Meanwhile, I am too excited to keep this to myself. Thank you, Kitty, for looking out for me.  And my husband thanks you too as the alternative would have been more costly as I was contemplating having a mirror made to fit the frame.

I thank my lucky stars for great friends and great design.

La Petite...

I am in the process of accessorizing a bookcase / entertainment unit we recently added to our family room.  The first step I took to fill it was placing an order with Quatrefoil Design, as I recalled seeing a recent addition to their family of framed intaglios, the 'La Petite' in Classic style.

Incorporating a traditional piece of artwork into a rustic casual setting allows our bookcase to represent the best of both worlds (mine & his).  I'll share more on 'his' in a future post.  

With the La Petite framed intaglio, I have the option to hang it on the wall as well.  There is always the possibility of changing things around, so it's good to have those type of options.

Ample space remains on these shelves but I am taking it slow.  Being selective about filling the gaps hopefully will result in a more gratifying experience for both of us.

Architectural Delights...

During the last week, I made a few new discoveries.  On a trip to New York City, I discovered buildings with amazing architectural details while walking around Soho.

The sculpted stone on this building is what made me take a second look.  And the design around the pillars are incredibly detailed.  I wish I could have taken a closer look.

The red brick on this building looks so clean and rich.  And the ironwork with the 'x' motif, I find very architecturally appealing. 

I also visited Aero, a decorative furnishings store owned by Interior Designer, Thomas O'Brien.  

 

It was a pleasant visual experience being surrounded by his designs, favorite decoratives and furnishings.

With a newfound interest in architectural models, I took home a souvenir from Aero.

My desire to take home more souvenirs were getting stronger by the minute but I refrained and now have a wish list filled with delightful things like lamps, tables, artwork.  I could go on-and-on.

I was also excited to catch a glimpse of Mr. O'Brien himself, hard at work.  It was one of those moments where I wish I had his latest book, American Modern, handy for personalization, as I only purchased it 2 weeks ago.  Given how busy he seemed to be, I don't think I would have had the courage to disturb him to sign a book anyway.

The trip was gratifying.  It leaves me with a yearn to go back again very soon and make more new discoveries.  

An urn...

It's the little things that will often catch my eye as the ad below by Bentwood Luxury Kitchens did the moment I glanced at it. 

 

Their cabinets are stunning but what intrigued me most was the roll of paper towel laying in the urn on the countertop. 

Realistically, it would be a slight inconvenience to grab the paper towel roll with wet hands.  Rather, it is typical to see paper towel rolls on a holder on the counter or...

Do you make the sacrifice for presenting things in a more decorative fashion vs. being practical?  I have been guilty of this on many occasions, including adding a foot stool in the powder room for placement of paper hand towels as there is no room on our pedestal sink.  You have to bend over in order to reach them.  Definitely not practical.  (Perhaps I need a tall urn?)

My search has been ongoing for some time now, looking for the perfect urn to house our kitchen utensils.  The photo is motivating me to continue with the hunt for a decorative home for those everyday needs.

The inspirational hunt begins very briefly with the internet.  Niermann Weeks' Positano Urn, which stands approximately 12" tall with a charming rustic vibe yet very classic in shape. 

A french iron urn from Pierre Deux allows you to see exactly what is being stored, like utensils.  

 
I wasn't kidding when I said brief.  Rest assured, the hunt will continue until I find the perfect marriage between practicality and architectural decoration 
 

Centerpiece...

My inspiration is this photo from Chesapeake Home magazine.

See the centerpiece on the table in the above photo? (If you click on the photo, you get a slightly better image to view or you can visit their website linked above.)  Well it motivated me to come home and immediately remove the ceramic pinecone finial from my studio and place it on our kitchen table.  

And that is the magic of design magazines and the role they play in our home.  

It's the little things that mean a lot.  I only wish the majority of my inspirations could come together so easily.

Having mentioned inspirations, have you had a chance yet to check out the latest entry on DC by Design's blog?  Jennifer Sergent recapped Day 1 at the Washington Design Center's Capital Design Days.  She touches on a discussion about trends and what's in and what's out.  Kravet's Inspired Talk blog also shared their take on yesterday's event as well as Picture of Elegance on her blog.  All perspectives are worth reading.

The non-descript dining room...

More and more, I am finding myself drawn to dining rooms where the table is stained in one shade and the dining room chairs are stained in another shade.  One is darker than the other.

Like this dining room designed by Frank Babb Randolph, who happens to be the owner, and photographed by Kenneth M. Wyner (DC by Design just posted on Mr. Wyner's residential photography & his new website).

 

It was featured in Washington Spaces magazine Early Spring 2006 issue and a favorite inspirational photo of mine.  And for more full-size photos on Mr. Randolph's home, please see a blog entry from Things that Inspire from July 2009.  The photos will dazzle you.

 I find this neoclassical vignette to be architecturally appealing in so many ways.  From Washington Spaces Winter 2005 issue featuring the home of Fred Steckhahn (President of Niermann Weeks) and McKinley Williams.  

It was designed in collaboration with Bradshaw Orrell and photographed by Paul Burk.

My eye lands on the back of the chairs where they are covered in brown fabric and pairs nicely with the dark table.  

This dining room by Phoebe Howard shows a great contrast with nearly white chairs and a warm-toned table.

One of my many challenges in life is to think outside the box.  I am also learning that my desire yearns for less of a matched look.  

And this space also proves a less-matched look can be a wonderful thing.

By Caldwell-Beebe (a Virginia-based interior design firm I discovered via Things that Inspire), have inspired me with the above vignette by showing how chairs with a worn-look can complement a polished table and still look elegant.

This inspiration piece photographed by Lydia Cutter comes from Home & Design Magazine's recent issue showcasing U.S. Senator Kit Bond and Linda Bond's home in Chevy Chase, Maryland. According to the article, Mrs. Bond worked with the infamous Bethesda-based antique shop, Tone on Tone, well known for their collection of Swedish antiques, in furnishing their home.

Another great pairing of different types of wood finishes as well as stains.  

Speaking of Tone on Tone, here is a dining room of the shop owners home depicting great contrast between the chairs and table.

The reason I chose the title to this entry as "The non-descript dining room..." will explain itself when you see my photo of our very own dining room. 

The title describes the room very well.  A photo taken with my iPhone, I readily admit that there is no camera that can make this room look good in it's current state. 

It was 1990 when I discovered a Bernhardt ad in House Beautiful magazine that soon became my dream table.  

Twenty years later, it is time to update my dream table's appearance.  

With the photos and links I've shared as inspiration, my thought is to keep the chairs in their original state and provide depth by having the table refinished and stained a darker color.

The question is how dark to stain the table?

And so now, a new mission begins.

Horses in art form...

My experience with horses are pretty close to non-existent (I rode a horse once or twice in my lifetime) yet I find myself attracted to them in the art-sense.

Over the years, I have seen fine displays of horse sculptures and weathervanes in homes featured in various design books and magazines. 

The first time I took notice of this type of artwork were from homes designed by DC-based Interior Designer, Mary Douglas Drysdale. 

 

I have been a great admirer of Ms. Drysdale's work for many years.  When I read Decorati's recent interview with Ms. Drysdale, it reminded me not only how much I enjoy viewing the photos of her projects, it also reminded me how I love her use of horses in art form in a home.

 
 My eyes are drawn toward the pair of horse sculptures.

 
Not only does the rooster look quaint in this setting but the horse does too.

The cover of Better Homes & Gardens Beautiful Interiors issue showcases a classic vignette by Ms. Drysdale.

I saved this special issue, not only for the inspirational photos in the magazine, but the cover captures the true essence of the neoclassic style I so much admire.

And the cover of Veranda from 1996 features more of Ms. Drysdale's work, including a horse statue on the mantle.

   
This is one of many design features by Ms. Drysdale I favor and will share more in future posts.

Meanwhile, I have discovered more inspiration and resources involving horse artwork.

Lori Graham, also a DC-based Interior Designer, presents great use of a horse sculpture among a chest, orchid plant and framed artwork, all capturing Asian charm in this lovely vignette.  I was unable to capture the photograph to share on this site, so please click this link to Ms. Graham's website to see it for yourself.

What a beautiful antique horse weathervane from 1st Dibs.  Ideal for a collector.

 
This framed artwork titled Neoclassical Cavallo Studies II is a reproduction by Domenico Marchetti, replicating a marble sculpture by Antonio Canova, a well-known Italian sculptor from the late 1700s and early 1800s.

The description on Design Toscano's website of this artwork says it well.  Fraught with incredible detail and form, the horses’ individually rippling muscles captured in historic pose are almost unparalleled.  To me, this affect resonates with architectural features I like in an urn, column or pediment but on a less-defined scale.  The edges and ripples are smooth and subtle.

A hand-carved horse such as the one offered by Restoration Hardware has remained in the back of my mind as a possibility for our home.

 
My home wishlist includes artwork depicting horses and now an urge to visit Middleburg and Upperville.  Sometimes you just never know where your inspiration will lead you.

Four chairs...

Spending much time at home these last few days has given me plenty of time to ponder and re-think how certain spaces in our home function, or the lack thereof.  

One space is our living room.  We spend a lot more time in our family room than we do in the space that is also designated for sitting and relaxing.  It does not give off the vibe of come sit down and take a load off. And let's have a conversation over coffee and dessert. Or I want to curl up with a good book and a cup of tea here.

Those are examples of what I want our living room to convey.  When we moved into our current home 5 years ago, it was my intention to create this type of space.  I had it set in my mind that 4 chairs surrounding a round coffee table would present the ideal conversation pit.  

Here is a photo that represent what I am looking for.

Designed by Interior designer Henry Brown and featured in the October 2009 issue of Traditional Home magazine, this photo brought immediate delight to my eyes.  The caption reads "The living room's bar area is defined by an antique French frieze fragment repurposed as a mirror frame.  The radial arrangement of four wing chairs creates an instant coziness."  Instant coziness.  I like that.

The height of the table and chairs are dead-on in what I am seeking for a conversation pit.  And the nailhead trim underscores the perimeter with all the classic details I love about a wing chair.

As I searched the 'net for more inspiration, I discovered chairs featured in a space designed by Candice Olson on the Art Dreams Home website that also exhibit the ideal height and appearance of comfort I very much admire.

To me, the chairs give a lean-back-and-relax type of vibe.  Again, it is something I really like in a chair. Not too stiff yet welcoming and exudes comfort.

This environment reminds me of a grown-up version of a tea party.  Four chairs surrounding a table.  And if you were to take it to the same level as Mr. Brown did in the first photo by including a bar in the living room, you could serve a splash of martini instead of a spot of tea.

Here's the headline on the invitation "Martini Party at the Conversation Pit".  Truthfully, I envision many nights curled up in a chair with a cup of tea and a good design book.  

This is what makes home design so much fun.  Dreaming up ways to create the perfect environment in your home.  

Gray matter...

As a massive snowstorm was headed in our direction, I opted to visit Potomac Paint to purchase Benjamin Moore paint samples rather than go to the grocery store for bread and milk.  I viewed being snowed-in as a good opportunity to do things around the house.  If we get desperate for food, there are 2 bags of M&Ms I purchased at CVS.

Focusing on our guest bedroom, which happens to have a guest occupying it this weekend (my mom), is in need of work. The walls have not been painted since we moved-in 5 years ago and there is no cohesiveness to the space. 

Before I do anything else to this room, I want to select a wall color that is neutral and will complement a classical theme.  

I selected 3 paint samples and applied swatches of color on the wall.

They are Stonington Gray (top), Coventry Gray (middle) and Litchfield Gray (bottom). 

Currently, my eyes are landing on the bottom color, Litchfield Gray, which doesn't really look all that gray. It appears as a bit more on the beige side vs. gray.

The drapery panels you see in the photo will be replaced with something else.  

And the theme of the room will be neoclassical.

My inspiration is a room by Suzanne Kasler, which is also featured in her book, Inspired Interiors.

We have been pouring over this book all day for wall color inspiration.  What I have found is that Ms. Kasler is very generous with sharing wall color brands and names on many of the rooms featured in her book.  

If you want to see Ms. Kasler do her magic with color, check out the House Beautiful feature from March 2007.  Some of the photos were included in her book.  I love the pinks & oranges.

And after seeing Ms. Kasler's home featured in Benjamin Moore's Color 07 magazine, I have more wall colors to consider.  

With our guest room is an adjoining bathroom.  My thought is to go light on the walls in the bathroom, perhaps even taking the same wall color in the bedroom and going a few shades lighter.

When it comes to making decisions about colors, I am indecisive.  It's a lack of confidence kinda thing for me.  I realize it will be O.K. as wall color can easily be changed.  I just do not want to ask my guy to do it over again, so I want to get it right the first time.  

Going to the grocery store may have been an easier task than trying to decide on wall color.  Where are those M&Ms.

Intaglios, Part II

Thank you ever-so-graciously, Things that Inspire, for including our home's hallway in your post today featuring the latest from Quatrefoil Design. 

Inspiration is a great thing, which is why I love reading blogs.  And when resources are provided, that is the icing on the cake.  When I see a photo of a fabric or chair I admire, my next reaction is "where can I get it?" 

With Things that Inspire sharing her passions that include offering classic designs as wall art via Quatrefoil Design is a great thing.  The variations of frames, sizes and intaglios are what I found so appealing about their site.

If you are an admirer of intaglios, here are some of my favorite displays for inspiration:

From Virginia-based designer, Barry Dixon, his portfolio from a residence in Bethesda, Maryland includes a quaint display of intaglios.  A vignette I've long admired.  The combination of cream-colored intaglios with a brown background and gold frames give it such a warm feel.

Let me add that his design book, Barry Dixon Interiors is filled with incredible photos showcasing his projects over the years.  I refer to it over and over again, simply for the inspiration and enjoyment I receive taking-in all of Mr. Dixon's great work.

With intaglios, I like to see different types of groupings of artwork displayed, which I find so pleasing to my eyes.  This is a great example by Suzanne Kasler.  It looks as though the intaglios are outlined in a dark color.  This vignette is one of my favorites in her book, Inspired Interiors.

 Another great source of inspiration comes from Home & Design magazine's website.  Three Italian intaglios from Greek Mythology.  Barbara Hawthorn Interiors designed this lovely classic home. 

It's hard to see closely in the photo but it appears that the frames have a design element I am drawn to, and that is the 'x' embossed around the perimeter of the frame.  It is one of my very favorites.

I am very excited to have discovered Quatrefoil Design and very much look forward to building onto my collection of Joni's.  

And so the quest for the ideal nest continues!

Butterflies and a dining room...

One glance at these prints during a visit to The Nest Egg, I knew I liked them...a lot.

For 2 weeks I thought about them over and over again, wondering where I could hang them.

After seeking feedback on our dining room in a recent post, which I thank you ever-so-much, I realized perhaps these prints of butterflies might work.

I returned to The Nest Egg, where Elisabeth so kindly climbed a ladder in her lovely heels and grabbed the artwork high up on a wall in their shop and where got to home with 2 new butterfly prints.

Today, they were hung above our buffet. (Heeding your advice, I definitely need more color here...perhaps a flower arrangement?  And how about decorative plates on each side of the artwork?)

The prints are from a gallery, Soicher-Marin, which after looking at their collections, I have a wish list of stunning artwork to dream about.  

I also discovered Suzanne Kasler's collection of artwork exclusive to Soicher-Marin.  Some of my favorites include:

I may not have discovered Soicher-Marin and their plethora of artwork if it weren't for The Nest Egg, which is available at their fingertips. 

Our dining room, well, that space is a work-in-progress.  The idea of incorporating red accents as well as darker furniture appeal to me.  If I could, I'd replace our dining room table.  It's just not high on our priority list right now.  You are right though, I should consider staining it a darker color.  The tabletop definitely needs refinishing after 20 years of wear-and-tear.  

And what I am learning about artwork is how much of a personal reflection it is to one's home.

Around the house in macro format...

What can be more exciting than a new camera lens.  So I went around the house taking photos with a new Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS lens.  

My car keys were the first victim.

When I used the adjustments in my Aperture software to sharpen and edge sharpen the photo, there was no difference from the SOTC shot.

My next victim was the vase filled with wine & champagne corks.  

I am now realizing how much I love this lens.  The background blur is just lovely.  

The glass of red wine is next.  

The glass stands out and is the center of attention amongst all the electronic gadgets that you see in just about every household.

Up the stairs I went and entered the guest room where I just hung a new mirror I discovered at The Nest Egg.

Wow, the flash really brightened this photo.  I then decided to put the image stabilization to the test and see how the photo would turn out without flash.

The lack of lighting certainly creates ambiance.  

In my studio, I snapped a photo of a pair of wall shelves.

Then I decided to crop the photo, featuring only the urn filled with pencils.

Not bad.  Sometimes I find my photos get a little pixelated, depending how far I crop them.

I am a true novice when it comes to photography.  The journey, though, is quite exciting and intriguing. My wish is to take photos that pop as well as featuring photos on this site that capture your eyes.  

It's fun to share the story when you have pretty pictures along for the ride.  

Whine & dine...

Our dining room is dreary.  I have tried to work with our existing dining room table we've had for over 20 years (thank you, Bernhardt, for producing quality casegoods that withstand the test of time) and I am not satisfied.  

At the recommendation of a professional decorator, I purchased a mirrored buffet (photo is circa 2008...old chandelier & drapery panels are reflected in the mirror and a mirrored-piece on the top & center of the buffet is missing...it has since been replaced).  The bowl was a temporary accessory at the time I took the photo.

I'm not crazy about the mirror hanging above the buffet and need either a different type of mirror or artwork. What do you think?

We added brown velvet chairs to serve as host chairs and last year, I replaced the drapery panels with ready-made dupioni silk drapes.

My thought is to add roman shades and flank with the window with custom-made panels.  Then the question is, what type of fabric and color(s) should I consider?

This room is a part of a master plan I'm working for over the next 24 months.

Intaglios...

If it weren't for Things that Inspire, I would have never discovered such wonderfully classic works of art by Quatrefoil Design.

If it weren't for Willow Decor, I would have never realized just how beautiful this work of art would look on the walls of her home.

If it weren't for my dear friend, Kitty, who shares a great appreciation for classical inspirations, prompting a discussion of this type of artwork, I may not have noticed new pieces being offered by Quatrefoil Design.

The new pieces I am referring to are two 17 3/4" x 21 3/4" framed intaglios, named the Joni I and Joni II. They were inspired by designs from Joni, author of the infamous design blog, Cote de Texas.  

My order arrived just before Christmas, and before Santa could say "Ho, Ho, Ho," they were hung in our upstairs hallway.

 Merry Christmas, hallway!  And Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you.  

Eye-catching packaging...

Ever since Jo Malone came into my life over 10 years ago, I have been influenced by the packaging & design of her product line.  Cream & black, clean & crisp, classic & understated. 

It's what influenced the color scheme of my closet.

 
Even down to the decor of this little space I like to think of as my 2nd home.

   This explains why I admire Barbara Barry's new Wedgwood china pattern, Curtain Call.  It has similar characteristics: clean & crisp, classic & understated.

And her tea is packaged just as elegantly.  The silhouette of a tea cup is a simplistic way of identifying the type of contents on the package.

I was never much of a silhouette person until I came across Barbara Barry's designs.  Searching eBay one day, I discovered a wall hanging with a silhouette of a classy pump that I've hung just outside my closet door. 

My favorite is Barbara Barry's silhouette chairs wallpapered in a powder room decorated by interior designer, Caroline DeCesare.  (Her sister, Allison Tyler Jones, is an incredibly talented photographer.  She shot the photos for Western Interiors magazine, now Luxe Interiors & Design.)

Great design has a positive impact on my decorating soul and this is one way I reflect it in our home.  I try not to get carried away though.  If I begin to post photos of black & cream-colored garage, you know I've gone too far.  ;-)

Vintage botanical artwork...

From the very first time I stepped foot in Valerianne, our local luxury linen shop, I could not take my eyes off this set of vintage botanical pieces, framed ever-so-elegantly. 

 
They are preserved botanical pieces from the early 1800s in France.  These photos do not do it justice but trust me when I say they are much better in person.

We hung them above our nightstands to add a little interest to the walls. 

In working with Aimee at Valerianne, she is helping me bring together a bedroom that is restful, serene and stylish in the most subtle way. 

And taking this project in baby steps is helping the decision-making a bit easier.  Perhaps one day we will get to the point that I may never want to leave this room.  Well, except to eat.  I suppose I must work too unless I win the lottery. 

Amongst all the great items Valerianne carries, they also have framed vintage wallpaper which I greatly admire.  

That's why I love Aimee's shop so much.  She believes in offering unique and one-of-a-kind things that will take your breath away.

Medicine chest...

Cleaning the countertop of my bathroom vanity is a tedious task as I have to remove all the pretty little jars that hold cotton swabs & balls as well as the knick knacks before wiping it down. 

Then I must dust & clean those jars & knick knacks before returning them to their original spots.

I want to simplify these steps because burning an extra 10 calories might endanger my girlish figure.  ;-)

Taking inventory of the product in my medicine cabinet was the first step. Nearly half the product have not been used in at least 6 months.  I prioritized what I use daily and purged or stored the rest in the closet.

In my search for medicine cabinet organizers, I found great acrylic 2-tier storage containers to store cotton swabs and balls that fit snugly in the cabinet. 

I love the concept so much that I added a smaller side-by-side cotton ball/swab container for our guest bathrooms.

 

I also found organizers that stick to the door of the medicine cabinet and a divided organizer & shelf set.

My goal is to keep the vanity counter free of clutter but that goal lasted only a few days.  You see, I discovered a quaint clock at The Nest Egg recently and thought how lovely it would look on the vanity.  It helps me not to lose track of time in the morning as I'm preparing to face the day.

And this is what I call my world of logic.  It only makes sense to me.  ;-)

Filling a bay window...

A bench, console table, pedestal, plants....these are a number of things that have crossed my mind in trying to fill the space in our living room bay window.

Seeing the lovely ottomans Mrs. Howard offers at her retail shops is something I've kept in the back of my mind for inspiration.  Then I landed on Restoration Hardware's website and discovered their linen covered storage ottomans were on sale.  Actually, I saw them earlier this summer, on sale, and waited too long to order them as they soon disappeared from their website.

A few weeks ago I was browsing Restoration Hardware's website again and noticed the linen ottomans were back and at a sale price I couldn't turn my back on.  It was meant to be.

The ottomans are sitting in the bay window, where I like to call the conversation pit, and is in need of sprucing up it's surroundings. 

They look very lonesome over there.  Just when I thought I resolved one problem, it creates another.  This means I will continue to fuss over this area until my eyes find comfort in what I see.  And so the saga continues. 

Rearranging our bedroom...

It started with the idea that if our armoire that houses our TV in the bedroom were a bit closer to the bed, we could comfortably watch the morning news and have a great view.  Dare we admit that our vision is deteriorating? 

The armoire was placed in the sitting room from the first day we moved-in until today.  You see, we have nothing to sit on in the sitting room.  Basically, I iron in the sitting room.  And I dream of having the means one day to knock down the wall and enlarge the craft room by taking over the sitting room.  For now, it remains as a sitting room with no seats.

Rather than admit our eyesight is deteriorating, with a few grunts and groans, we lifted and slid furniture across the carpet, the 'TV command center' now sits within a reasonable eye shot from the bed.

 
 
Do you see what I see?  A blank wall!  The ideas are filling up my interior-design-obsessed-mind.  Oh the possibilities.  I have longed for a wall behind our bed.  I was tired of blocking windows with our nightstands and bed.

There is still work to be done here.  The good news is we will save money on new eyeglasses.  The bad news is...I can envision a new area rug here as well as mirrors to flank the nightstands. 

Rearranging a room can freshen the look as well as cause chaos at the same time.  That is, chaos to the checkbook. 

And that is the story of my life.

A bench....

Decorating a hallway is no easy task.  Over 4 years in our current home, I finally discovered the most fabulous mirrors (featured in a previous post) and we now have a bench, thanks to a great sale. 

The photo is not a great one but given that it was taken at nearly midnight, it was the best I could do without natural light.

What I love about this bench is the neutral palette, the 'x' design beneath the seat and the nailhead trim.

Truly, I have a great weakness for those design elements.

The hallway is a space that does not get utilized very often but it is one area that I pass through each day.  When it pleases my eyes, a feeling of contentment overcomes me and it makes me feel good inside.

No knook or cranny should be overlooked.  What pleases the eye, pleases what's inside of us. 

And a great sale pleases the checkbook.

Magazine pile: circa 2008

The benefit of hanging onto old magazines and not purging as often as I should affords me the opportunity to re-read the magazines.  My memory fades pretty quickly which is why, on occasion, I have purchased the same magazine twice. 

As I played housewife yesterday, I decided it was a good opportunity to clear out some clutter, including magazines circa 2008.  But of course this task took much longer than it should because I had to flip through each and every magazine, just in case I missed something.

And I did.

I discovered a bathtub that provides radiant heat and warms the interior of the tub so water stays hot longer. 

I have long-fantasized for a tub like this.  Particularly in the winter when you'd like to soak for a while but the water's temperature cools too quickly and forces you out of the tub sooner than you wish.

Whirlpools are not a favorite of mine (high maintenance when it comes to keeping the jets clean and the forceful sprays of water made my skin itch) but I will choose a heated tub anyday.

There was a time in our life where we could have used a double wall oven made to fit a single wall-oven space.  I am very intrigued to see that GE offers such an appliance.

With a combined 30 inches, a 22-pound turkey has room to baste in the bottom with convection capability.  Amazing.

This lovely GE Monogram compact refrigerator offers cold storage for canned beverages as well as wine.   It's the best of both worlds.

Thank you, Southern Living Ultimate Kitchens 2008 for reaffirming my desire for one of these refrigerators in our home.  I'll trade the gift of a piece of jewelry or designer handbag for this practical appliance any day!

Well that was fun.  This task took me 2 hours to complete.  I am now ready to begin a new pile of magazines.

Sunday synopsis...

So much to do, so little time.  We've all heard that expression many times and this weekend was one of those times where this motto applies. 

Thanks to a very neighborly neighbor, we were able to order a wonderfully architectural mailbox post by Mayne Company for our home at a group rate.  And this afternoon, my guy installed it with great ease. 

I am very pleased with the outcome.  And it is a great coincidence that our HOA is conforming to an all black mailbox post and metal mailbox (formerly green).  The black coordinates with our front door and shutters.  We lucked out on this request.

My dear friend, Kitty and I spent a considerable amount of time again at our favorite luxury linen shop, Valerianne, today.  They are having a sale up to 60% off through the end of September.  So who can resist a sale like that!?  I was able to purchase the most adorable house slippers by Patricia Greene for my mom at nearly 1/2 the price as a birthday present and threw in a few gifts for our bedroom. 

Since I am playing housewife tomorrow and taking a break from work for a day, I intend to give much needed attention to our home. 

Lastly, I have a dear friend whose pre-teen son suffered from a brain tumor (fortunately has been removed) and has created some wonderful tees and such promoting her charity with "Brain Tumors Suck".  I believe any type of tumor and cancer sucks.  Anything that shortens the life span of youngsters does sucks even more.  So I ask if you have the means to support this worthy cause, please do so by making a purchase via Cafe' Press and search for "BrainTumors".

I don't love brain tumors. but I do love Sundays, particularly when Mondays involve a no-work-day.

Trial & error...

A few months ago, I purchased a pair of lamps (on sale) with the intention of placing them on a future console table in the family room one day.

In the meantime, I have been griping about the lack of light we have in our family room and how I'm unable to see clearly and read a magazine while relaxing on the sofa. 

The day finally arrived when I discovered a console table on sale that is well-suited for the room that receives a lot of use in our home.

I was anxious to add the lamps I've been saving for this spot.

 

After taking-in all the glory of displaying the new lamps I realized how un-functional they are.  If accent lighting is what I'm looking for, than I achieved that goal.  Unfortunately it is not what I'm looking for.  Task lighting is the answer. 

I want to curl up on the sofa and read a magazine or newspaper without straining my eyes.  If I had thought carefully about this, I should have realized that lamps with a maximum capacity of 40 watts is not going to do the trick.

You know how you'd wear a great pair of heels that killed your feet just for the sake of beauty?  Well that theory applies here. 

For the sake of beauty, I will be reading with a flashlight but at least our lamps will be pretty.

Note to self:  conceal lamp cords by taping them to around the perimeter and legs of the console.  And you call yourself 'pretty'.  Sheez.

Hanging & painting...

So I can goof off tomorrow, I attempted to take care of household chores today.  First, I painted our front door with another layer of black exterior paint. 

 

When I purchased the paint at Home Depot, I asked for their exterior paint in basic black.  I learned that the color of true black (Behr brand) is called Mickey Mouse ears.  Very catchy.  It's a name of color that will be hard to forget.

We are also attempting to decorate our upstairs hallway.  I convinced my guy to take a break from the BBC America channel and help hang 2 mirrors.

 

What I love is my guy's affinity for perfection.  He used his Black & Decker laser level (a great Christmas present) and measurements from a future bench we intend to set below the mirrors for proper placement.

On top of weekly laundry chores and dusting, I feel as though I've conquered enough tasks to reward myself with some R&R tomorrow.

Valerianne...

Today my good friend, Kitty and I spent the afternoon visiting Valerianne, a local luxury linen shop.  I've had a desire to visit this shop since I read & posted an article from the Washington Post on the care and selection of linens earlier this year.

Kitty and I were in awe over the display and selection of linens, towels, home accessories, pillows, gifts and fragrances.  There was vintage wallpaper framed ever-so-elegantly and sleepwear to make you feel like a queen.  The fabric selection for custom made duvets, pillows, window treatments and just about anything you can think of for your bedroom is at your fingertips. 

It was extremely gratifying to work with Aimee, the owner of Valerianne in devising a game plan for our respective bedrooms. 

I decided to start with sheets first.  This is where Aimee introduced me to the linens of Anichini.  I selected basic ivory sheets and am very anxious to crawl into bed for my first night's rest with crisp and sturdy linens. 

 

Our bed needs a bit of texture which Aimee helped by selecting this pillow that coordinates with the color of our walls and headboard.

 

Our bed is in need of a duvet cover, which will be the next step I take in the game plan we've devised for our bedroom. 

It was a delightful afternoon spent in the world of linens and I'm glad we had Aimee's guidance and the company of my fellow partner-in-crime when it comes to many things, including shopping for our home. 

Restoration Hardware, classically speaking...

Have you seen the latest catalog from Restoration Hardware?

I spent more time last night flipping through the catalog than scrapbooking while hanging out with my gal-pals.  And just about every page had me in wish-list wonderland.

Number 1 on my list is this media library.

 

This is exactly what I am looking for.  A combination of cabinets, shelves and a place for the TV.  The architectural details are very classic and I'm a big fan of classic style. 

Speaking of classical style, this roman capital definitely sets the tone. 

 

And the floor mirror is just as exquisite.  

This Victorian Pendant is divine in many ways. 

 

Can you see how lovely it looks in this setting.

 

I adore the wing chairs and pedestal table.  It's simplicity at it's best.

Here's to a never-ending wish list. 

Magazine clippings...

I love the twinge of excitement I get when I see a photo in a magazine that sparks an interest in my decorating-obsessed mind.

For example, I was trying to relax during a pedicure and began flipping through the August 2009 issue of Southern Living magazine.  My eyes were getting heavy as the therapist was massaging the arch of my foot.

When I flipped to the page that features the table I have been pining for from Wisteria catalog, I could barely contain my excitement. 

I went from a relaxed state-of-mind to an inspired state-of-mind.  It only reiterated my desire for this piece of furniture.  And it was hard to relax again as I wanted to rush home and visualize the table in our foyer.

Reading magazines before I go to sleep is a routine of mine.  It relaxes me and sometimes helps me drift off to sleep quite easily EXCEPT when I see an article and/or photo that strikes my inspirational nerve like this page from the August 2009 issue of Better Homes & Gardens magazine.

The fabric-covered drum on the chandelier is what caught my eye.  It's Barbara Barry's signature fabric and quite a clever way to incorporate it into the eating area.  I am truly inspired.  I need to go to sleep but my mind begins to race with possibilities using this fabric. 

Suffice it to say that I find reading magazines both relaxing and inspirational.  I take huge risks reading them as a relaxation mechanism because you never know what you are going to see when you turn the page.

Keeping it light...

In an attempt to keep things light, I found an open bookcase that fits the bill for our bedroom.

I love to read, particularly interior design magazines, before I go to sleep.  And this bookcase from Home Decorators Collection Outlet was the perfect piece of furniture that does not appear to be heavy in wood and provides an 'open' feel to the space.

It is also an opportunity to showcase some favorites, like a collection of Jo Malone fragrances.

It is a practical yet decorative way to enhance our space. 

And a great bargain is the icing on the cake.  :-)

Drapery rods & panels...

Our bedroom is at last beginning to feel like a room that I want to spend time in.

We hung the drapery rods and panels yesterday, fussing with them in an attempt to find balance without making the wall look heavy.

So we opted not to hang a pair of panels on the windows at each end.  Instead, we hung one drapery panel on each outer window.  I've seen this in numerous decorating magazines and can tell you that my guy was reluctant about this approach but I convinced him it would be fine.

I was also nervous about the drapery rods.  They are painted in pewter and my fear was they would blend with the wall color instead of complementing it.  My fear dissipated once the rods and panels were hung.  The ecru velvet panels are a nice contrast to the drapery rods as well as the wall color.

At night, the room is soft & serene.  Lighting makes such a difference.   During the day, the room is bright but remains serene.

The artwork depicting chairs and ottomans (paying homage to my love of architecture & design) I purchased from Kimberly Applegate and framed at ACMoore is now hanging on our wall after all these months sitting against the wall, waiting for attention.  (The cabinet in the corner will be moved...not loving where it is sitting now.  I'd like to place a chair there.)

The frames we selected have an "x" design element to it.  A favorite design feature of mine.

 

The room is not yet complete.  I am, though, satisfied with the direction we are headed in. It's all about baby steps, lessons learned from previous mistakes and patience.  

I am also learning new things along the way and always open to feedback.  

Right now, I am going to go plump the pillows on our bed, light a candle, crawl under the sheets and devour a couple interior design and decorating magazines.  That is my idea of serenity.  :-)

A souvenir...

My addiction to home decor magazines often leads to me to the newsstand at the airport and at local grocery stores while traveling. 

This trip, all it took was a visit to Publix where I discovered Florida Design's Palm Beach Home & Decor.

Getting a taste of what the local flavor is in terms of interior design is what I like to do.  And in flipping the pages, my eyes stopped on this page:

Love those "x-shaped" designs as shown on the coffee table and on the back of the chair.  The chandelier is simple and elegant.  And I am making a mental note on the placement of artwork on each side of the mirror.

On the last page of the magazine, Roche-Bobois' ad featuring their Maestro sofa is one I like a lot.

It is a serious lounging-kinda-sofa.  Perfect for the family room. 

Still dreaming here...not only about lovely upholstered goods but wishing I were still on vacation. 

And vacation souvenirs can be in many shapes and forms.  From seashells to local home decor magazines.

Robb & Stucky...

During our visit to southern Florida last week, I got the chance to visit a furniture retailer, Robb & Stucky, with a showroom that seemed endless and filled with casegoods and upholstered furniture to send me into eye-candy-wonderland. 

I'm not very good about hiding myself from mirrors while taking photos.  I was so distracted by the beauty of this "room" I could only focus on capturing as much as I could into the photo frame.

Do you ever walk into a furniture store and say how a certain piece of furniture would look great in a particular room of your home?  It drives my guy crazy because all he can hear are the dollar signs popping into his head as I think out loud.  And that's what I am pretty much doing, particularly when I said "these chairs and mirrored nesting end table would look great in our bedroom."

You could say that I am vocal about my dreams and fantasize a lot about what could go where in our home.  ;-)

My sister and I were drawn to the wall color and decorative striping on the wall of this particular room vignette.

What drew us to Robb & Stucky was their brochure my sister brought home after a business meeting she attended at their store's community meeting room (this could be a potential meeting place for a crop, right).

Well in the brochure I discovered a leather sofa, potentially for our family room.  So we went to check it out.  It's a wedge-style sectional sofa.  Not too big, not too small.

And with sexy nailhead trim, I had to go run my fingers over it in the flesh. 

The nailhead trim continues around the perimeter of the back of the sofa too. 

They were making it too easy for us to make a purchase from their store as they ship anywhere in the U.S.  I didn't need to hear that.  The good thing is we can stew on this for a bit before making any final decisions on a major furniture purchase as I have the salesperson's email address.

It was quite an experience visiting Robb & Stucky.  I wish we had one located nearby in my neck of the woods but it's probably a good thing we do not.  The temptation would be too great. 

If you are ever near one of their locations, it is worth spending the time perusing their goods as you never know what you might find that would look good in your family room.

A shoe...

It's a Barbara Barry kind of shoe that I came across on eBay last year.

Barbara Barry is a favorite designer of mine and also a search phrase I use a lot while browsing on eBay.  I just happened to be on eBay at the right time when I discovered this framed print.

The color scheme reminds me of the Jo Malone gift boxes (cream with black pin-striping) and a silhouette of a dressy pump in Barbara Barry fashion.

After all these months, I was finally able to hang it in our bedroom next to the closet door using my picture-hanging tool kit I mentioned in a previous post.

eBay is a wonderful resource for many things, including decorative items for your home.  How thrilling it can be when you discover something you've been seeking, particularly when it's at the right price.  You've had moments like that, right?

With my guy working diligently on repairing drywall in the sitting area of our bedroom, our holiday weekend has been a productive one.

A chandelier...

If I may, I'd like to share my story with you about a chandelier....

When I first discovered this chandelier in a retailer's catalog, I was drawn to it for it's elegant yet somewhat modern features.  When I saw the price, I realized I needed to hold-out for a sale, a big sale.  So I watched & watched, checked their website, even on days when they were offering 30% off, it still was not enough.

One day recently, I received an email note from Overstock.com advertising a sale and the items they featured in their pictorial was THAT chandelier.  The one I've longed for.  When I got around to checking their site the next day, it was already out-of-stock.  

I should know better.  Never hesitate on a great deal.  The worse case would be to return it, right? 

So I "tweeted" Overstock and kindly asked if they could check their inventory on this chandelier.  And you know, they tweeted me right back.  No sooner, did I hear back from them, they had more chandeliers in stock (7 to be exact).  With my heart pounding fast, I logged onto their site and placed my order.

When I received a confirming email note with shipping details, I knew what I longed for was on it's way to our home. 

And now this lovely chandelier hangs in the master bedroom, giving me something pretty to look at each time I doze off to sleep and when I awake each morning.  It brings a smile to my face.  Yes, lighting can do that to me.  It completes me as it feeds my designing soul. 

If you think this is a very dramatic way of expressing affection toward a chandelier, just give me a chance to go on about a set of linen guest towels with embroidered topiaries I recently came across.  I can seriously obsess over the smallest of details.

A bedroom surrounded in Pashmina...

At last, we have color on the walls of our master bedroom. 

It has been cloudy outside most of the weekend so I was unable to capture shots to get the full effect of the paint color, which is a grey with a tinge of green.

Last weekend my guy painted the ceiling with Behr's white ceiling paint.  And this weekend he painted the walls with Benjamin Moore paint in Pashmina.  Both are great paints to work with although my guy is now beginning to favor Benjamin Moore. 

You can get somewhat of idea of the contrast when you see the white doors against the wall color.

I have curtain rods on order and have my fingers crossed they will arrive by next weekend so we can take advantage of the 3-day holiday weekend to finish this room.

We also have artwork in need of hanging which my guy is dreading because he is enjoying the clean and smooth-looking walls. 

Once all the final touches are complete, I will share more photos.

Thanks for hanging-in there with me for all those months I spent debating and deliberating on wall color.  It is definitely a fear I am trying to overcome.

Tidbits..

Just a couple of quick bits of info I want to share this evening. 

First, questions regarding the stamp "Keep Calm and Carry On" I used in the fabric project mentioned in my previous post is one I borrowed from my inspiring friend, Pam.  She has listed the details of where you can find the stamp on her blog.

And for anyone who appreciates red wine, I have a recommendation for you.  Last week I discovered a Shiraz from our local wine shop called "Layer Cake".  It's from Australia and is absolutely delicious.  The next time you are shopping for wine and are interested in trying something new, I highly recommend this wine.

Finally, we are in the midst of a painting project in our master bedroom.  And if all goes well, I hope to share some photos tomorrow night.

Wishy washy Wednesday...

What better title to describe my fickle demeanor.  Color commitment is obviously a battle for me and I believe the color for our bedroom walls that I mentioned recently will work.

My guy likes the contrast and so I compromised a bit.  We are going forward with Benjamin Moore's Pashmina (it's the color closest to the window). 

And with the wonderful feedback I received from my Facebook & Twitter friends, we will paint the ceilings in a white flat paint.  There's nothing more unattractive than roller marks which glossy paints have a tendency to leave if you do not paint fast enough before it dries.

I believe, according to my guy, we will paint the ceiling first.  Let me backtrack a bit, the first step is to repair nail pops and any drywall blemishes before we begin painting. 

Once we move onto the walls, I want to paint the wall behind our bed first to see how I like it before we proceed any further.  Then go from there.

We've got a plan.  Now it just needs to be implemented.

It seems that I'm always creating more work for my guy, particularly when I try to do things myself.  For example, I hung 3 pieces of art over our guest room's bed and the first thing he said was, it is crooked.

He will now go right behind me to balance the artwork properly.  I just get a little impatient but I'd rather try to get the wall art up now (before we paint) so I can get a sense of where to place it.  And this guest room is on our "to-do" list once we complete the master bedroom.  I'm not sure if my guy knows this, but if he reads it here, he now knows.  ;-)

We find ourselves in similar situations with home projects and finding the time to complete them.  Please know I share in your desires to get them accomplished.  As the The Pioneer Woman says, just keepin' it real.

Drapery panels & wall color...

For a very long time now I have wrestled with wall color for our master bedroom.  It is difficult for me to confidently make a decision as I am always second-guessing myself.  At the same time, I am also trying to select appropriate drapery panels for this room.

Would you like to join me in this on-going journey that has come in and out of my life for the last 2 years?  If so, please read on. 

In all the research I have done on this topic, I am leaning toward drapery panels that closely match the wall color. 

Like what you see in this living room:

It shows a clean & crisp look to the room.  The drapery panels are a nice complement to the space but do not scream for attention.

The bedroom below is a great example of allowing the draperies to play second fiddle to the accessories and colors that accent the space.

After all this research, I learned that it is best to purchase your draperies first before selecting wall color. 

I've had my eye on velvet drapery panels in order to achieve a serene and soft look to our room.

I love velvet for it's softness that it provokes you to rub your hands over it again and again.  And it brings another layer of texture in the room amongst the fabrics on the bed, pillows and ottoman.

Once I make a selection, I will need to find a wall color that resembles the drapery panels in a monochromatic fashion. 

Or perhaps color-match it at the paint store.  We will see.

As I have searched for drapery panels to my liking, I kept in the back of my mind what Barbara Barry suggested in an article I read not so long ago.  And that is you do not want your drapery panels to look like a prom dress. 

Bottom line:  No prom dresses for this bedroom.  Just layers of textures in a monochromatic scheme.  And I hope to get there one day very soon. 

A directory with inspiration...

On my way out the door after checking out at the grocery store last weekend, I grabbed the latest New Home Directory (it's free) to get a pulse on new home construction and to perhaps be inspired by the interiors of model homes featured in this directory.

It has been a long time since I've toured model homes so this booklet is the next best thing. 

There was one ad that triggered a design thought:

A glass-top table in the center of the foyer with a flower arrangement (or possibly a sculpture) as the focal point.  I like it.  I think the glass-top allows the piece of furniture to look less bulky, especially if you are dealing with a small foyer.

This is not a project I will be pursuing for our home in the near-term.  As much as I would like to see results sooner vs. later, it is nice though to have goals and implement them at some point down the road when the budget says it's OK to proceed.   

I keep a file with ideas such as this one but in an effort to conserve paper and be "green", I am filing it here under "home goals".  Using this site as an organizing resource is not a bad idea.  I wish I had thought of it sooner.
